Why Most Sports Bras Don't Fit Asian Women, and What We Did About It

If you’ve ever stood in a fitting room holding a sports bra that technically fits Asian women your size, and still felt it dig, roll, or gape, you’re not imagining it. You’re not the wrong size. The bra was made for the wrong body.

I’m Fiona, the founder of Active Liberated. I built this brand because I’ve lived that frustration, and because I couldn’t find what we needed anywhere else.

The Sports Bra Problem Most Brands Won’t Admit

Here’s something the activewear industry rarely says out loud: most sports bras are selected, developed, and sized using Western body measurements as the baseline.

How Western Sizing Fails Asian Women’s Bodies

That matters because Asian women, and curvy Asian women especially, often carry their bodies differently. Different torso lengths. Different hip-to-bust ratios. Different rib cage measurements. And when you’re on the curvier end of the size spectrum, those differences are amplified. A size 2X in a mainstream brand might accommodate your cup but crush your ribs. Or support your bust but leave your shoulders doing all the work.

This isn’t a personal failing. It’s a significant product gap that the industry has been comfortable ignoring.

The Gap in Singapore and Malaysia

If you search for sports bras in Singapore or Malaysia in extended sizes, you’ll mostly find the same options: international brands that either stop at XL, or scale up their existing patterns with little thought given to whether those proportions actually work for Asian bodies.

What Most Brands Get Wrong About Sports Bra Fit

When I started researching the market before launching Active Liberated, I discovered something that genuinely surprised me: most factories size bras using body weight and cup size as their primary proxies for fit.

Why Cup Size Alone Is Not a Reliable Guide to Fit

It sounds reasonable until you think about it. An E cup at a 32 band and an E cup at a 42 band are completely different products. They need different construction, different fabric distribution, different strap placement. Using the same sizing logic for both, just adjusting the number, is how you end up with bras that technically carry the right label but don’t actually support the body wearing them.

How We Validate Every Bra Before It Reaches You

At Active Liberated, we go further. Every bra we carry is put through a rigorous fit validation process before it reaches you. We test against the real measurements that determine whether a bra actually fits and supports, not just whether it passes a factory checklist. The industry’s shortcuts are the reason so many of us have quietly given up on certain kinds of exercise, or spent years settling for uncomfortable. We don’t take those shortcuts.

Why Size Range Matters as Much as Fit for Curvy Asian Women

Getting the testing right is one part of the problem. The other part is simply carrying sizes that include you.

Sizes M to 4XL: Because Curvy Doesn’t Start at 3XL

Active Liberated stocks sizes M through 4XL. Not because we thought a wide range would be good marketing, but because curvy doesn’t start at 3XL and we weren’t willing to pretend otherwise. An Asian woman can be curvy at an M. She can carry her curves in her bust, her hips, her torso, in combinations that standard sizing completely ignores.

Our bras run from S$49 to S$69. Because proper support at every size shouldn’t be a premium that only straight-size women can access.

Beyond 4XL: Growing With Our Customers

And 4XL is not where the story ends. As we get to know our customers better, we intend to keep expanding the range. If you’re currently outside our size range and would like to be included, we genuinely want to hear from you. Share your measurements with us and you’ll be part of how we grow.

You Belong in Every Fitness Space

Fitness culture has a visibility problem. Most activewear campaigns show a single body type, slim, often tall, usually a Western frame. The message, even when unintended, is that movement is for a certain kind of body.

It isn’t. Movement is for every body. And you deserve to move with confidence, not despite your clothes but because of them.

If you’ve spent years feeling like activewear wasn’t made for you, it wasn’t. We’re working to change that, one fit-tested product at a time.

Shop Sports Bras Fit-Tested for Asian Proportions

Every bra in our range has been carefully selected and fit-tested for Asian proportions. Not filtered by trend but assessed against the standards that actually determine whether a bra supports your body.
